Travelogue - Unforgettable journey by Dilip Padmasolala
A far-fetched journey, to the eastern coast of the Deccan plateau, I describe it a far-fetched, as an adolescent, as a college chap, I guess, one would not prefer, at least to a considerable extent, that falls away, far away from risk, fatigue, weirdness and at times bewilderedness too. I can collect to my mind all that is related to the journey...
Winter 2009, Saturday
My friends Depee, Tillu, Mahe, Dj, Sada, AK, Muni and I, reached Secunderabad railway station. We hurried down through the subway tunnel and reached the platform. I had managed to keep a few cosy, warm seats in a first class carriage. The early morning train, had whiled away few early hours, at last, I presume, a little later quarter past seven, the engine whistled vociferously, it gathered all its speed and pumped the air in to our faces, it was a cool and a breezy morning, the sun was shining in to the carriage through the glass pane of the window.
I pulled my blanket out of the bag, slipped in between the sheets, Dj emptied the flask of cardamom tea in to a paper cup, and the fragrance of the beverage filled the ambiance with activeness. We all had our share, only a few moments we were fast asleep, and only when the T.C.R woke us up in the evening for ticket verification, we realized that we had just a 15 mile drive ahead.
At half-past seven in the evening the carriage screeched to halt, we collected our baggage and were down the road to Depee’s lodgings at VKRP, a hamlet. Having travelled for the first time in a train, I brought to my mind the sweet poem “From a railway carriage”, by Robert L Stevenson.
The road that leads to the village is broken, and we cannot take a vehicle, we should only go on foot, on the way we crossed past thatched roofs placed amidst green meadows, cattle grazing at green straw, farmers with ploughs heading toward home, after a day-long tedious work, road side motels, river Godavari to one side of the gravel road, and to the other side orchids of poppy and coconut.
At nine we reached, completely tired, everybody of us badly needs a shower, unlike city men villagers prefer outdoor bathrooms, and a huge well surrounded by bamboos welcomed us. We drew as much water as possible, splashed at each other, villages hardly have a water scarcity, until all the wells dry up. After bath, the land lady served the supper tonight, we soon fell asleep.
I am a late riser, yet I woke up at quarter to five in the morning, I was surprised to see Sada, Dj, and Tillu dressed up to go out by then.
“Wont you join us to temple”, screamed Mahe.
It is what we came for, to admire the village art and architecture, “I’ll, please spare a few minutes, let me put on clothes”, I replied.
“I hate making any plans, this chap never makes up to time”, muttered AK.
I dressed up and we left to Bhimeswarswami Temple, Samalkot. It was build out of huge brown stones, to the rear side of the temple was a lake intervened in the bed of huge green paddy fields, to one side colourful birds chirped playfully, cool breeze from upon the lake entertained us, adds to the entertainment was amusement of the country men, at the attire we donned.
Villages have a special flavour, it is the traditional flavour, its untouched beauty, and yes, the sentence would be incomplete without including innocent and charming damsels of village. All down one side we were missing our sweethearts at Hyderabad, several miles away from each other, only a few texts and calls, all down the other side our eyes feasted upon the natural beauties of the village. Couple of days later, we vacated the village leaving some nice memories behind.
We took the evening train to Vizag, through the rail window, we saw the thatched roofs turn to buildings, dark orange sun sunk in to the skyline of the city, meadows and woods are replaced by smoke emitting factories, it was then I understood how much we owe to villages.
Vizag is a city of special enchanting air upon it, the sea coast was such a picturesque sight, the moment we saw the virgin beach, we ejaculated with joy. Had we found a treasure, greater delight could not have shown upon our features, incidentally that day was Muni’s birthday, on that full moon day, amid the dark blue waters of the sea, upon a huge rock, he had cut the cake.
All of a sudden, “cheers”, shouted Dj, with a bottle of beer, we ran for our sip. That evening was as unforgettable as any important incident of my life, we were drenched in the sea waters, we played with the sand dunes, ate spicy chat-pata made out of puffed rice and tomatoes. We swallowed huge pieces of raw mango mopped with red chilli powder, peanuts, both roasted and boiled, corn and what not. It was a feast of several cheap yet delicious items.
“Anybody up for a sleep”, asked Mahe. “Yeah, am tired”, said Sada, “we too”, gibed we all. Upon the open terrace we slept counting the stars, cool air from the sea swept the drops of sweat dripping down the forehead.
In the morning, upon the terrace, the sun pinched us in our faces and we woke up,
“We’ll breakfast and move in to the city”, hinted Tillu, as if we are going to stay whole day upon the terrace in the hot sun. We had put on some cloths and left to Kailash Giri, the park city upon the hill, we took a rope-way carriage to climb the hill up. We had a clear view of the city from the top of the hill, the cool air surrounded us gently and Dj took a fag out, he offered one to me, It was a relief, a puff of smoke would sooth the shivering out of the cold breeze flowing in there.
It was a cheerful day... sea, greenery, the hills, the rope way, friends, fags and unnecessary talking, all of them made it cheerful.
We hardly knew when the vacation had come to an end, college commenced and we need to move as we can. We took the train to Hyderabad late in the evening and were again amidst the dense cloud of smoke, pollution, regular chore, college, lectures and what else, fatigue.
Exactly six more months passed and Muni had hinted something...
“Are you guys up for another tour?”, “yes...!” we shouted in unison.

Happy moments in stats period -23/06/2010
Had an awesome day at college
Was moving through all campus from morning to evening, starting from the boring lab to the happy moments in stats class
As routine work, sir was asking for the absent list and there reason. Then he started asking about age old concept VECTOR
Many answers, some from mobile dictionary (SSV), some from mobile internet (Dilip)
Awesome was murthy gave a answer for vectors in statistics in biological concept, the next second whole class based with smiles all, fuck that I was unable to capture the fantastic situation
Meanwhile, me and abh1 copied the original definition from sir book, and pirated the answer:-P
The sentence used my abhishek when I gave answer and chetan, and satish sir was against it
“Got caught selling prince of Persia cam rip, pirated version to English people"
I was continuously laughing for 10 min
Really, to say today's statistics period was full of joy and massthi
Thx for abhi, murthy and satish sir making the period enjoyable in the moody afternoon session
